Gabi’s Story – The Story Behind 2nd.MD

By Ada Ryland & Jade Phillips

Gabi is the daughter of Clint and Jade Phillips, the founders of 2nd.MD.  As a infant, she had a  stroke that left her unable to move the right side of her body.

Now, at 2 ½ years old, she is recovering beautifully. If you have seen the video above, you know the beginning of Gabi’s story, when her parents realized that she couldn’t move the right side of her body. Early visits with the pediatric neurologist and stroke specialist left them with the understanding that Gabi may never walk or talk. Later, an MRI showed that although the right side of her brain is healthy, the left side looked like a shrunken, shriveled mass, with fluid in the voids where there should have been brain tissue. Gabi had had a massive stroke of the medial cerebral artery. How is Gabi now?

Gabi is recovering beautifully.  With a great deal of prayer, physical therapy and love, at nineteen months old, Gabi started walking! Then, one month after her second birthday, she started forming words.

“It was amazing! She started talking better after she started walking.” said Jade. “The therapist said that once children who have had a stroke develop one area, the others seem to follow.”

Now, at  2 ½, Gabi is talking up a storm and running to keep up with her older brother and sister.  She still has a bit of a limp, but has made so much progress with her gait that she has stopped doing physical therapy. She continues to do occupational therapy to improve the use of her right hand and arm. Her hand, which was originally pulled into a tight fist, is more relaxed and is doing much better.

Jade says, “The insights of the pediatric neurologists on 2nd.MD provided such expertise at a time when we had so many questions.”

Gabi’s healing is absolutely miraculous. Gabi is inspiring not just because of her incredible resilience and the superhero-like way her brain is re-routing itself, but also because she is just a regular little girl.

Maybe regular little girls are more powerful than we think.

If you have an amazing and inspiring recovery story like Gabi’s, we’d love to hear it.
