Michael Reinhorn

MD, MBA, FACS
Professional Focus Dr. Michael Reinhorn is board-certified in General Surgery specializing in inguinal hernias and umbilical hernias. Dr. Reinhorn has completed over 4,500 hernia operations, roughly 400 a year. He has developed expertise in minimally invasive inguinal hernia surgery and umbilical hernia surgery. For the last decade, he has been performing the “Cleft-lift” or “Bascom flap” procedure and perfecting the technique. Since there is no formal training required after surgical residency to become a hernia surgeon, Dr. Reinhorn took it upon himself to only focus on these two conditions in his 17 years of experience to become an expert in both.

After receiving his undergraduate degree in Engineering from Cornell University, Dr. Reinhorn completed his medical degree and residency in General Surgery at Boston University, where he became Chief Resident. Dr. Reinhorn currently serves as the President and Co-founder of Boston Hernia and as an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Reinhorn’s research focuses on reducing opioid prescribing and utilization in hernia patients. He is the chairperson of the opioid reduction task force for the Americas Hernia Society Quality Collaborative. He has written numerous peer-reviewed research publications in medical journals regarding his findings as well as his patient outcomes to a national database. Since 2021, Dr. Reinhorn has served on the American Board of Surgery as a Consultant for the General Surgery Certifying Exam Committee for Hernia. In this role, he is able to share his expertise in inguinal hernia anatomy and repair with future surgeons. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Member of the American Hernia Society, the Association of Surgical Education, and the Boston Surgical Society.
